Australian Coins in a Jar Everyone needs it, most people do not seem to have enough of it.

Even people who appear to have a lot of it, want more.

Do you have enough money?

So what is money and why is it so important?

The dictionary definition of money is:

"...any circulating medium of exchange, including coins, paper money, and demand deposits."

Generally, money in and of itself, has no intrinsic value, unless of course you are talking about rare coins! So why is it so valuable?

Basically because it is a medium of exchange. You exchange your labor for money, and you can then exchange your money for goods and services.

Much easier to manage than a pure barter system!

The problem is when you want or need more goods and services than you can afford to pay for. Not a lot of fun when that happens. More than once I have been in the position of having to scour the house to find enough coins just to buy a bottle of milk!

But it is so much more than that. We use money to compare ourselves with others, it is an easy way to measure relative success or failure.

We all have deeply held beliefs about money, but we are not always aware of them. We like to think that we are rational when it comes to making decisions about money, but many of our triggers are emotional.

More often than not, we are so focused on not having enough that we forget to pay attention to the money that we do have!
